The Florida Breast Cancer Coalition Research Foundation (FBCCRF) is pleased to announce the availability and process for applying for our 2008-2009 round of education grants in Florida. The Foundation receives the funds that we grant through the sale of the Florida End Breast Cancer specialty license plate. An Education Committee helps direct the Florida Breast Cancer Coalition Research Foundations education grant program. The Florida Breast Cancer Coalition Research Foundation is a non-profit grassroots organization dedicated to the eradication of breast cancer through Advocacy, Education and Research. Those interested in applying to the Florida Breast Cancer Coalition Research Foundation for funding should complete the application following ALL of our guidelines and requirements. Please, ONLY Florida non-profit organizations who are currently classified by the IRS as a 501 (C)(3) and/ or 509 (a)(1), (2), or (3) with an historic interest in providing life-saving health information to Florida residents are eligible to receive grant funding. APPLICATION DEADLINE: Wednesday, March 19th, 2008. The 2008-2009 grant theme is 'Education that Empowers Women to Play an Active Role in their Breast Health'. The Florida Breast Cancer Coalition Research Foundation is particularly interested in proposals that target individuals with language and cultural barriers, individuals who live in under served areas and programs that target individuals that have the capacity to educate others. We expect to award between five and seven education grants up to $10,000.00, and totaling no more than $64,000.00. Learn More About Education 2007 Grant Awards FSU Research Foundation - $10,000 Award Taking the lead in Community Wellness - A church-based cancer prevention project that focuses on community based intervention to increase breast cancer screening in mid-life and older African American women in Leon County. The project will identify, train, and facilitate the work of a cadre of health ministry leaders who will develop health programs in their respective churches, resulting in an increase in breast cancer screenings and an increase in overall positive health behaviors. Heartland Rural Health Network, Inc. - $8,913.92 Award Rural Breast Health Empowerment Program - This program emphasizes the importance of education in empowering women to be proactive in their breast health. The project addresses an identified need of under served women living in rural communities of Santa Rosa and Escambia Counties. Haitian American Association Against Cancer - $10,000 Award Women, know thy Breasts - This education program will emphasize the importance of early detection and prevention for Haitian, Haitian American, and minority women ages 20 - 49 in Dade County. The program will focus on culturally-specific educational components and forum tailored to local health care providers, agencies and community stakeholders. The goal is to increase the number of minority women accessing cancer screening services. Alachua County Organization for Rural Needs, Inc. (Acorn Clinic) - $10,000 Award Across the Cultural Divide, Improving Women's Health Project - This project will focus on Spanish speaking and African American women who live in rural remote areas of Alachua, Bradford, and Union Counties where access to health education and mammography is greatly reduced. The program will be used as a gateway for women to receive free clinical breast exams and mammogram's. Total Grant Funding: $38,913.92 2006 Grant Awards MD Anderson Cancer Center Orlando MD Anderson’s proposal seeks to empower African American women in the central Florida area to take an active role in their breast health by educating them on the advisability and availability of clinical trials. Through a collaborative effort with community groups, MD Anderson Cancer Center Orlando proposes to address the misinformation and lack of information often present in many African American communities regarding treatment choices for breast care. The overall goal for this project is to dispel myths, change attitudes and increase the consideration and utilization of clinical trials by African American women in their breast health treatment plans. The project will utilize trusted community members in delivering an accurate depiction of the clinical trial process thereby addressing an educational need for women with cultural barriers in underserved areas. The project will outreach to African American women through black churches, beauty parlors and through local community agencies in black neighborhoods. Between 5,000 and 10,000 women will be served. Funding will be used to help MD Anderson produce educational materials on clinical trials specifically geared toward the African American community and ensure that the material is widely distributed. SunServe (Sunshine Social Services, Inc). Sunserve, established in 2002, is South Florida’s social service agency to benefit the gay and lesbian community. SunServe has partnered with a newly emerging South Florida advocacy and education organization, Women for Women, to submit their proposal entitled “Removing Barriers to Breast Health Care for Women Who Partner with Women.” |
